Buddhism during the Nara Period aimed for chingokokka (spiritual protection of the
state), but in the Heian Period, Buddhism came to value ascetic practices in order to
attain special powers that give one the ability to cast spells and make prayers come
true. That is why the temple, a place for ascetic practices, was selected to be not in
a sunny, lively location, but in the depths of the mountain away from the town and
people. (This form of Buddhism is called "Sangaku Buddhism", and these types of
temples are called "Sangaku temples", or "mountain temples".)
Let's look inward and self-reflect while standing peacefully in the grounds of the temple.
Also, since this is inside the mountain, close your eyes and listen to the birds singing
and insects crying.
根香寺 は、急坂を登りつめた青峰山 中腹にある、弘法大師 により開基された木立の中の
お寺です。なぜ、このような険しい山の中に建てられたのでしょう。
奈良時代 の仏教は、鎮護国家 を目標としていましたが、平安時代 になると仏教 は、祈りや
まじないが実現する不思議な力を得ようと、苦しい修行を重んじるようになりました。その
ため、明るく華やかな場所ではなく、人里離れた山の中にお寺を建て、山中を修業の場とし
たのです。(このような仏教のあり方を、山岳仏教 といい、このようなお寺を山岳寺院 といいます。)
お寺の境内に静かにたたずみ、自分の心を見つめてみましょう。また、ここは山の中です。
目を閉じ、鳥の声、虫の声などに耳を傾けてみましょう。
人々を大変困らせていました。そこでこの地方の村人は、山田蔵人高清 といういう弓の
名人に牛鬼の退治を頼みました。高清は根香寺の本尊である千手観音 (重要文化財 )に願
をかけ、そのおかげで牛鬼を見つけ出し、見事に退治したそうです。
そして、怪獣 の角を根香寺に奉納して、その菩提を弔ったと伝えられています。
About 450 years ago, there was a terrifying, people eating beast called "Ushioni"
that lived in this area, and the local villagers were troubled by it. So they decided to
hire a master archer, Yamada kurando Takakiyo, to slay the beast. Takakiyo prayed
to Senju Kannon, the principle image of worship at Negoroji temple. It is said that
thanks to his prayers, he successfully found the beast and slayed it.
They then took the horns of the beast as offerings to Negoroji temple, and prayed
that the beast's soul will rest in peace.
